Furiously Fun and Furiously Busy

by Merle Wenger

What a busy month it is. I guess that's typical for Springtime with indoor and outdoor cleanup around the home being a tradition. As we go about our interior Spring cleaning it is not unusual that we finally decide to pass on one overly tired piece of furniture, lamp or accessory and put a new one in its place. One new chair can refresh a clean room in the best sort of way. This month House of Oak & Sofas is promoting their Amish-crafted furniture. New items arrive every month and if you haven't stopped by for awhile, now's the time. You know are policy. We love lookers. Eventually those who appreciate our quality do return and buy.

Spring Fundraiser

Also keeping us busy at House of Oak & Sofas is our Spring fundraiser on April 28. The Furious Flower Poetry Center has been our favorite charity for some time now and this year we are making a special effort to get you involved. Furious Flower Poetry Center works collaboratively with artists, academic institutions, and literary organizations to cultivate, honor, and share the diverse voices of African American poetry. We first noticed them when we attended a summer program at the end of Poetry Camp week and came away astounded by the energy, we felt from young children who were high on poetry. A $50 scholarship will send one child to camp and even if you can't attend our fundraiser, we encourage you to support Furious Flower's great work at JMU and in our community. If you want to read more about them check out their website.

The fundraiser on April 28 will feature the Ebony Blue band who will fill the store with great variety of music for dancing or listening. Furious Flower is famous for quality programming and quality refreshments at their events. This Furiously Fun Party will feature heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Pulitzer prize winning poet Rita Dove will serve as celebrity hostess, along with her husband Fred Viebahn. Rita Dove will sign books that will be available for purchase. There's certain to be a few poems read during the evening as well, but the focus will be on "party" more than "poetry." We want everyone to have a fun time.

High Point Furniture Show

The other important event this month is the High Point Furniture Show. For the past 25 years some of our staff travels to High Point for this major exhibition. Here we become the customer as all of our wholesale vendors set up their season's new offerings and tempt us to buy. Seeing the room settings alone is quite an experience. Professional designers go to great lengths to tempt you into their showrooms with stunning art, accessories and live flowers. Many showrooms serve lunch as well as dinner to keep shoppers going through building after building. I always say that even though I have attended for more than 25 years I have probably only visited about 20 percent of the market. The showrooms, located in buildings from small to huge, are spread throughout the city of High Point as well as Lexington, Thomasville and Greensboro. Like any shopping trip, furniture shopping is exhilarating and exhausting. What we buy will show up in our showroom this fall.

Norwalk Furniture

Norwalk furniture sent us this intro to their Spring offerings. This may or may not be your taste, but it is a sample of what's happening out there in furniture land. Enjoy the view.

Hope your month is as busy as ours. Remember: do your good deed and help support Furious Flower either through our fundraiser or by making a donation to their great work.
